An Unforgettable Three-Day Adventure

Join Casco Bay Custom Charters aboard M/V Monhegan, a historic 37’ Beal Island-built vessel with over 40 years of service connecting the mainland to Monhegan Island. This storied wooden boat, designed for comfort and endurance, offers a one-of-a-kind way to explore Maine’s coastal heritage.

Our private, three-day voyage departs from Portland, guiding you through the stunning landscapes of Casco Bay and beyond. Along the way, you’ll encounter historic landmarks, pristine islands, and abundant wildlife before arriving at the timeless retreat of Monhegan Island—a place where breathtaking views, rich history, and peaceful island life come together.

Your Itinerary

Day 1: A Historic Voyage Begins

Your adventure departs from Portland Harbor aboard M/V Monhegan, a 37’ Beal Island-built wooden vessel with over 40 years of service transporting cargo and passengers to and from Monhegan Island. As we navigate through the scenic Casco Bay Islands, you’ll feel the legacy of this storied boat, which is perfectly equipped for the open water.

Our first stop is Seguin Island, home to Maine’s highest-altitude lighthouse, constructed in 1857. Operated by a non-profit dedicated to preservation and education, this historic beacon houses a first-order Fresnel lens, an awe-inspiring artifact from the 19th century. Few of these lenses remain in such pristine condition, and you’ll have the chance to step inside the tower for a closer look.

From Seguin, we continue the passage to Monhegan Island, where time slows down. You’ll check into the Monhegan Island Inn, a charming retreat that offers stunning views and simple comfort—no TVs or phones, just the sounds of the sea.

Day 2: Immersed in Island Life

Monhegan Island is renowned for its dramatic cliffs, quiet forest trails, and thriving artist community. Spend your day exploring the island at your own pace:

Hike the island’s scenic trails for panoramic views of the rugged coastline.

Take a refreshing dip in the Atlantic for a cold-water plunge.

Visit local art galleries off the main street to view works inspired by the island’s natural beauty, including pieces from the original owner of M/V Monhegan.

End your day with a locally brewed pint at Monhegan Brewing Co., soaking in the island’s laid-back charm.

Day 3: Returning Home on a Coastal Route

Your final morning offers time to reflect and relax before boarding M/V Monhegan for the journey back. We’ll chart a scenic coastal course, weaving through the protection of Casco Bay’s outer islands. Along the way, we’ll pause to observe seals basking on the rocks and seabirds soaring above the waves. If the conditions are right, we may even spot whales surfacing in the distance.

This voyage is more than a trip—it’s a return home for the vessel M/V Monhegan and an unforgettable experience for those aboard. Whether you’re captivated by the history, the artistry, or the open ocean, this journey offers a unique glimpse into the heart of Maine’s maritime heritage.
