Our Historic Maine Vessels

MONHEGAN

Length: 37 ft. | Width: 11 ft. | Capacity: 6

Built in 1969 by Elihu Beal of Beals Island, Maine, MONHEGAN is sturdily constructed out of wood following the time-tested “Downeast” design that has made the Maine Lobster Boat a world-renown, safe workhorse.  She originally served a dual role, working as a lobster boat during the fall/winter lobstering season around Monhegan Island; and, in the summers, she served as a passenger ferry, shuttling people and goods between Monhegan Island and the mainland.

MONHEGAN’s original owners maintained her to the highest standards, and she has been featured in various calendars, paintings, and postcards over the decades.  She was perfectly suited to become Casco Bay Custom Charters original vessel when we started offering private charters in 2014. We have worked closely with MONHEGAN’s original owners to continue the tradition of rigorous maintenance that have preserved her for half a century.

MARIE L

Length: 36 ft. | Width: 11.5 ft. | Capacity:16

Celebrating her 70th year of service in Casco Bay, the historic MARIE L is our newest addition to our fleet.  She was built in 1950 right here in Casco Bay and originally was used as the passenger and freight ferry to Bustins Island.  Countless vacationers and local residents have fond memories of cruising Casco Bay aboard MARIE L.  In fact, we occasionally host charter guests who have previously been aboard MARIE L from decades ago!

MARIE L is built out of heavy white oak frames and timbers and planked with local cedar and pine.  She was built by boat builders who were descendants of the early “Downeast” boat builders, so she and MONHEGAN bear many similarities, but her hull shape and lines evoke an earlier aesthetic that gives her a distinct, easily discernible look out on the water.
